What you'll learn
The Design Thinking Innovation Lead programme equips you with the strategic mindset and practical methodology to navigate complex challenges, lead creative teams, and design solutions that work in the real world. You’ll move from understanding human-centred innovation to confidently facilitating workshops, coaching teams, and shaping innovation strategy. The exact skill set that fintech, healthtech, edtech, government, and consultancy now actively hire for.
Across the qualification, you’ll develop competence in:
- Human-centred innovation philosophy, principles and processes
- The full Design Thinking methodology, from empathy and ideation to prototyping and testing
- Leading and coaching teams through workshops, ideation sessions and group facilitation
- Applied ethnographic research, persona-building, and journey mapping
- Positive psychology and collaboration techniques for creative team environments
- Innovation strategy, implementation planning and scaling solutions in business contexts
By the end of the programme, you won’t just understand Design Thinking. You’ll be able to lead it: in a boardroom, a workshop, or across a multi-disciplinary project team.
Support that has your back
Online learning shouldn’t mean learning alone. Every Design Thinking Innovation Lead learner is wrapped in a holistic support model that combines industry expertise, administrative guidance and wellbeing care.
- Dedicated Support Advisors for administrative guidance, navigation and day-to-day queries
- Qualified Course Facilitators with deep cloud-industry expertise, available via dedicated discussion forums
- Peer-to-peer academic forums where you can connect, share notes and form study groups
- Professional wellness support staff for personal or emotional challenges that arise during your studies
- A purpose-built Online Campus and Learner Portal for materials, progress tracking and assessment submission
Our support model is a cornerstone of our commitment to quality, aligned with international best practice for distance and technology-enhanced education.

Built for employability
Every learner completes a credit-bearing Work Experience Module. The component that separates an Occupational Certificate from a purely academic qualification. It’s how you prove, in a real workplace, that you can do the job.
You’ll be placed with one of the Academy’s growing network of work-placepartners, supported by a formal three-way Memorandum of Understanding between yourself, the Academy and your work-place partner. As a Design Thinking Innovation Lead, you’ll lead applied ethnographic research, facilitate innovation coaching, and design creative solutions in real organisational contexts. Building a Portfolio of Evidence that demonstrates exactly what employers want to see.
The Valenture Institute brings established partnerships with a diverse set of South African organisations to deliver the workplace experience component, giving learners exposure to genuine innovation challenges across multiple industries.

Where this qualification can take you
Design Thinking is no longer confined to creative agencies. The MICT SETA identifies it as a high-priority cross-cutting skill, and the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) flags Design and Critical Thinking as one of the top predominant skills gaps across South Africa’s ICT, telecommunications and advertising sectors.
The competencies you build in this qualification underpin several high-demand occupations on South Africa’s 2024 to 2026 National List of Occupations in High Demand, including Management Consultant, ICT Systems Analyst, and Programme Manager. Employers across fintech, healthtech, edtech, public sector and consultancy actively hire for the skills you’ll develop.
