Next intake: mid-2026. Speak to admissions to confirm your cohort start date.
What you'll learn
The Media Graphic Designer programme equips you with the practical, work-ready skills to design across the full spectrum of modern media: digital, print, motion, and the ‘tradigital’ space in between. You’ll move from foundational design principles to confident, client-ready production. The exact skill set that advertising, branding, marketing, and creative agencies actively hire for.
Across the qualification, you’ll develop competence in:
- Design fundamentals: colour theory, composition, balance, contrast and grids
- Typography, hierarchy and visual communication principles
- Brand identity, logo design and visual storytelling
- Portfolio development and the business side of design: project management, client relationships and ethics
- Digital and print media production, from concept to delivery
- Photography, videography and motion principles for visual content
- Industry-standard design software, pre-production processes and client briefing
By the end of the programme, you won’t just understand design. You’ll have a portfolio that proves you can do the work, the technical fluency to deliver it, and the business literacy to run with a brief from concept through to client sign-off.
Support that has your back
Online learning shouldn’t mean learning alone. Every Media Graphic Designer learner is wrapped in a holistic support model that combines industry expertise, administrative guidance and wellbeing care.
- Dedicated Support Advisors for administrative guidance, navigation and day-to-day queries
- Qualified Course Facilitators with deep industry design expertise, available via dedicated discussion forums
- Peer-to-peer academic forums where you can connect, share notes and form study groups
- Professional wellness support staff for personal or emotional challenges that arise during your studies
- A purpose-built Online Campus and Learner Portal for materials, progress tracking and assessment submission
Our support model is a cornerstone of our commitment to quality, aligned with international best practice for distance and technology-enhanced education.

Built for employability
Every learner completes credit-bearing Work Experience Modules. The component that separates an Occupational Certificate from a purely academic qualification. It’s how you prove, in a real workplace, that you can do the job.
You’ll be placed with one of the Academy’s growing network of work-place, supported by a formal three-way Memorandum of Understanding between yourself, the Academy and your placement partner. As a Media Graphic Designer, you’ll work to live client briefs, deliver real production work, and build a Portfolio of Evidence that doubles as a job-ready showcase. The kind of credentialled, real-world experience employers and freelance clients actually look for.
The Valenture Institute brings established partnerships with a diverse set of South African organisations to deliver the workplace experience component, giving learners exposure to genuine creative briefs across advertising, branding, digital media and beyond.

Where this qualification can take you
South Africa’s creative economy is growing, and so is the demand for designers. The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) lists Graphic Designer and Multimedia Designer prominently on its 2024 to 2026 National List of Occupations in High Demand, classifying both as high-growth roles driven by the rapid digitisation of South African business.
The MICT SETA goes further: in its 2025/2026 Sector Skills Plan, Multimedia Specialist and Graphic Designer are named as Sectoral Priority Occupations, with senior roles often hard-to-fill because employers struggle to find designers with 4IR-aligned skills like motion graphics, UI/UX, and AI-assisted content creation. The skills you build in this qualification map directly to that gap.
